The process of permitting a building will vary depending on the requirements of your building department. However, we have found that it is typically an easy, uncomplicated and inexpensive process. There are several things you should do to make sure you are compliant with your local building requirements.

• Call your local building department or official – determine if you even need a permit for the steel building you are purchasing. In many cases, depending on your location and use, the steel structure you are purchasing may net even need to be permitted. If it does need a permit, find out what process you need to follow. Many building departments have all the information you need online.

• Find out what restrictions or setback requirements you need to follow - Many areas may restrict the size or height of your steel building. Also, typically, if you do need a permit, there are requirements as to how far from your property lines you can build.

• What type of plans are needed – if a permit is required, find out if they will accept digital, emailed plans or if wet-sealed hard copies are required. If special engineered drawing are required, there may be an additional cost though this is rarely the case.
